ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION:
  • For Employees who reside in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and California, additional compensation is offered through a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).

POSITION SUMMARY:

The individual in this position is responsible for offering new solutions to customers through application systems development. This Applications Scientist position requires exceptional technical knowledge and skills related to chromatography, communication and coordination skills, working closely with the collaborators and marketing/sales person to drive expand business opportunities. He/she has to have hands-on experience with liquid chromatography (LC), liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and related instruments to perform applications development, to understand market demands, and to evaluate new technologies. The individual understands market, technological and regulatory trends and anticipates future opportunities especially in clinical, pharmaceuticals, forensic, food, and environmental markets to satisfy customer needs and Shimadzu's business objectives. This position focuses more on creating new business opportunities through application systems development incorporating any of Shimadzu products. Other related duties may be assigned from time to time.

JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Conduct marketing research and summarize them to find new applications.
  • Provide application system development to deliver the full potential of product.
  • Draft scientific, technical and marketing documents such as papers, application news, brochure, and presentation.
  • Provide technical and scientific presentation at conferences, trade shows, seminars and customer sites.
  • Provide demonstrations to collaborators, customers and colleagues.
  • Evaluate new analytical techniques and instruments.
  • Research competitive situation for LC, LC-MS and related products.
  • Cooperate with Shimadzu subsidiaries worldwide.
  • Must travel overnight and drive, as the position requires both domestically and internationally.

  • SCOPE:

    This position's primary focus is to develop application systems to ensure that Shimadzu meets or exceeds its goal and objectives. This position will be involved in a part of North American and global collaboration projects. This position will also provide technical expertise and applications development to our customers, sales force, technical support, and service.

    PROBLEM SOLVING REQUIREMENTS:

    The individual in this position is required to solve complex problems within limited time frame with technical proficiency, scientific creativity and independent line of thought. The position requires extensive troubleshooting and isolation of variables in a methodical and efficient manner to solve customers and market problems. The ability to work with a diverse group while allocating limited resources effectively.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    Ph.D. Degree in one of the Life Sciences. Minimum three years of experience in analytical lab experience as an applications scientist is desired. Global experience a plus. Position requires excellent written and oral communication skills including presentation experience to large and diverse audiences.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    The position requires frequent lifting or with other means for movement of instrumentation and parts. May include frequent bending, stooping, squatting, standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time and pulling/pushing of parts can also be expected. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 20 pounds routinely throughout the day. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

    SAFETY/PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

    Position is required to maintain proper housekeeping and safety standards. Proper use of personal protective equipment and safety devices are required as stated by the Corporate Safety Document policies and procedures.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    This position is based in an office or chemical/biosafety lab area that requires regular and predictable attendance. It will involve working alone on projects and collaborating as part of team. Incumbent may work at different workstations during the day and travel to regional locations/customers in order to support the product line and SSI Customer needs. Extra hours may periodically be required, in order to fulfill the functions required by this position. The position will include contact with all SSI employees and requires prompt and friendly handling of all related inquires.
