Overview

A Research Assistant I position is currently available in Dr. Sephira Ryman's laboratory at The Mind Research Network, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The candidate will work on projects that use multimodal MRI neuroimaging techniques (e.g. MRI/fMRI/DWI), biospecimen analyses, and detailed assessment of neuropsychiatric symptoms to study neurodegenerative conditions (Parkinson's disease and dementia syndromes). The lab has several ongoing projects that span a range of topics, including evaluating how cerebrovascular and gastrointestinal dysfunction contributes to disease onset and progression in neurodegenerative conditions.

DUTIES:

The primary duties of the Research Assistant I will be to collect research data (neuropsychological assessment, questionnaires, neuroimaging data, and biospecimens) with human participants, with additional opportunities to gain experience analyzing neuroimaging data. The Research Assistant I works within established research protocols to perform or assist with routine assessments and/or procedures relevant to the study. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (and Spanish, preferred)
  • Collect, process and assist with compilation and verification of research data, samples, and/or specimens, following strict protocol and detailed instructions
  • Performs or assists with routine data verification and quality control, ensuring data integrity and consistency with prescribed study protocols.
  • Performs or assists with the execution of routine research protocols, such as interviewing, testing, and/or scientific procedures.
  • Performs and/or assists with routine data analysis and interpretation, as specifically assigned; may utilize specialized analytical equipment and/or instrumentation, or specified statistical data analysis programs and software
  • Assists in the setup, operation, and maintenance of research equipment, instrumentation, and/or facilities, as specifically instructed.
  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives.
  • Must have weeknight/weekend availability as needed
  • Perform scientific literature searches relevant to the research
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Individuals with a bachelor's degree in psychology, or pursuing a degree in a related field are preferred. Those with experience and interest in neuroscience, clinical psychology, and/or neuroimaging are strongly encouraged to apply. Individuals with current experience in neuroimaging and MEG data collection are preferred.

Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy experience.
  • Prior experience with patients or research subjects is desired. Preference given to applicants with previous experience, particularly clinical research experience, with cognitively impaired older adults or psychiatric patients.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with research participants and their families.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work easily with research participants and research team members.
  • Strong general computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with computer spreadsheets and database software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Spanish language proficiency

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a dry laboratory environment. Will operate standard office equipment and will frequently stand, walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, perform repetitive motions and occasionally lift objects that weigh up to 20 pounds. May interact with research participants.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience + $500 sign-on bonus.
