The central mission of the In Vivo Evaluation Group, Biological Testing Branch (BTB), Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) is to develop models for NCI's Patient Derived Models Repository (PDMR). The PDMR is a repository of patient-derived models that include in vivo tumor fragments, in vitro tumor lines and cancer associated fibroblasts, and DNA/RNA isolates originating from patient biopsies, resections or circulating tumor cells. The goal of the PDMR is to distribute well validated and highly characterized material to researchers worldwide. A secondary mission is to test the potential of anticancer agents in vivo using xenografts implanted with the patient-derived material or transgenic mice harboring known genetic mutations of interest.


The Research Technician will be responsible for:

- Isolating DNA and RNA from tumor tissue and in vitro cell cultures on a large scale
- Determining concentration and assessing the quality of the samples using strict quality control guidelines
- Preparing multiple aliquots of RNA/DNA for distribution
- Determining the % mouse contamination in all in vivo samples for distribution using a real time PCR based assay
- Aiding in the management of transgenic mice to include, but not limited to, mating, weaning, and genotyping
- Maintaining a proper living environment for the transgenic mice
- Performing other routine tasks as needed (e.g., label preparation, stocking the lab, etc.)
- Tasks are performed independently following a training period
- The above work is conducted under Biosafety Level-2 conditions



To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

- Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation in a field related to biomedical research. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- No additional work experience is required for candidates with a Bachelor's degree
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

- Previous animal handling experience
- Knowledge of DNA/RNA isolation methods and use of PCR

- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office software
- Demonstrated organizational skills and database management skills
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to maintain precise records
- Ability to be flexible to meet changing needs
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment
