Merck is on a quest for cures and is committed to being the world's premier, most research-intensive biopharmaceutical company. Today, we're doubling down on this goal. Merck Research Laboratories is a true scientific research facility of tomorrow, and will take Merck's leading discovery capabilities and world-class small molecule and biologics R&D expertise to create breakthrough science that radically changes the way we approach serious diseases.

At our organization, we are using a range of modalities to positively impact human diseases in key therapeutic areas. One modality that we are exploring is the enhancement of the ability of the human immune system to eradicate tumors using oncolytic viruses which directly kill tumor cells and activate innate and acquired immunity. We have recently made key investments in the oncolytic virus arena, and are expanding these investments in the development of our capabilities in this space. To this end, we are hiring a Senior Scientist to be a part of our Oncology Discovery team in Palo Alto, CA to develop and implement in vitro and ex vivo assays to characterize and evaluate mechanism of actions of various oncolytic viruses including expression and function of payloads for both mouse and human. The successful candidate will have considerable hands-on experience in cell-based assays for virus characterization (e.g. TCID50, plaque, virus replication, virus neutralization, cell viability, and quantitation of viral copy number), immune-based in vitro assays, and flow cytometry.
Education Minimum Requirement:

• Ph.D in Virology

Required Experience and Skills:

• Experience in handling multiple virus families and/or multiple viral vectors
• Hands on experience in cell-based assays for virus characterization, immune-based in vitro assays, and flow cytometry
• Understanding of viral interactions with the immune system
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team
• Strong communication and organization skills

Preferred Experience and Skills:

• Experience in animal models of cancers
• At least 2 years of post Ph.D research experience in an academic or industrial setting is highly desirable.

Your role at Merck is integral to helping the world meet new breakthroughs that affect generations to come, and we're counting on your skills and inventiveness to help make meaningful contributions to global medical advancement. At Merck, we're inventing for life.
