PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Advanced Biomedical Computational Science(ABCS) is a part of the Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Program at Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The ABCS provides technology development, scientific consultation, collaboration and training, and high-performance computing support to the NCI and NIH scientists and staff. The Radiation Oncology Branch (ROB) plans and conducts pre-clinical and clinical research on the biologic and therapeutic effects of radiation administered alone or in combination with other modalities of treatment; to develop novel technology and imaging based approaches for radiation oncology; to investigate the natural history of disease to understand and evaluate means of diagnostic assessment for the purpose of optimizing treatment selections; and to provide radiation therapy as well as general oncology consultations for patients admitted to other NIH Clinical Research Center (CRC) clinical services, in a collaborative approach.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES - Laboratory Technologist III

The NCICompass Program, a joint venture between the Genetics Branch and the Laboratory of Pathology, was launched by senior leadership of the Center for Cancer Research (National Cancer Institute) to establish a comprehensive translational genomics platform to enable precision therapy trials for adult and pediatric cancer patients at the NIH Clinical Center. The ClinOmics program is seeking to recruit a Laboratory Technologist.

The duties and responsibilities of the position are the following:


- Receive clinical specimen packages, verify presence of correct content and associated paperwork, and enter specimen-tracking information in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that is maintained in the laboratory
- Extract nucleic acid material from clinical specimens and enrich target nucleic acids, according to CLIA compliant sops that have been developed in the laboratory
- Generate high-quality libraries for whole genome, exome, panel, RNA sequencing
- Load libraries onto and operate next-generation sequencing instruments
- Perform all quality assurance tests and quantification assays during the course of sample preparation, target enrichment, library generation, sequencing and other wet-lab procedures
- Accurately track each sample and document all steps for each sample in the workflow including all reportable results from QA tests and quantification assays, in the LIMS, according to CLIA standards
- Perform regular equipment calibration and maintenance, as needed
- Perform regular reagent and assay validation, as needed
- Troubleshoot and resolve experimental problems
- Provide regular updates, plans, concerns and progress to the laboratory supervisor and the team, and participate in weekly laboratory meetings
- Work collaboratively with team members, especially to ensure seamless hand-over of samples and duties when planning to be away

Qualifications:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:


- Possession of a Bachelor's degree in science or related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:


- At least two years of experience in a molecular diagnostic laboratory in an academic, commercial or government setting
- Experience in gathering requirements, evaluating, configuring software for tracking samples and reagents
- Experience in molecular biology techniques: DNA, RNA isolation and quantification, electrophoresis, spectrophotometry, PCR, real-time PCR, DNA cloning techniques
- Ability to operate, calibrate and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment
- Ability to use LIMS and web-based databases; knowledge of Excel
- Ability to be organized and keep detailed and accurate documentation
- Ability to communicate (oral and written) effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Expected Competencies:


- Prior work in a CLIA/clinical setting
- Next-generation sequencing experience
