The basic function of this position is to, independently or as part of a project team, plan, design, and implement varied technical projects and studies requiring knowledge of engineering and/or the physical sciences. Work requires expertise and full application of sound scientific principles, theories, concepts, techniques, and project management skills, as well as a working knowledge of Merck methods, standards, procedures, and practices. The incumbent is expected to collect and interpret information and develop solutions to projects of various scopes. Minimal supervision, guidance, and direction is employed by the supervisor, however, periodic checks and reports are required to review soundness of technical judgment and the status/schedule of the effort.
The incumbent will report to the Technical Operations Director or to a P4 Chemist. Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Development, design, construction, validation, or initial operation of chemical, pharmaceutical, safety/environmental processes and facilities using new or existing technologies for new and in-line human products.
Analysis of complex processing problems through critical analytical thinking and the design/execution of laboratory/pilot scale experiments.
Development of sound scientific justification for planned material and process and equipment changes. Technology transfer of products and processes to Merck manufacturing plants and licensees worldwide.
Analysis of current and proposed environmental and drug and/or biological product regulatory requirements and determination of the applicability and impact on Merck operations.
Development of corporate engineering, quality, and/or environmental policies and standards and in the assessment of compliance status for both Merck and non-Merck facilities.
Supports the site strategy by implementing project plans to reduce costs and improve productivity.
Responsible for documentation preparation, maintenance, and review including SOP's, process descriptions, atypical process reports, and change requests.
• As a chemist supporting manufacturing at Merck Cherokee, you may be required to work with hazardous chemicals while wearing personal protective equipment.
• Merck Cherokee is a manufacturer of beta lactam antibiotics and, as a result, candidates must be able to work in and around the laboratory, manufacturing, and warehouse areas associated with such chemicals.
Education Minimum Requirement:
• M.S./Ph.D. degree in appropriate chemistry/engineering/scientific field
Required Experience and Skills**:
• For M.S. degree: minimum 3 years of manufacturing or technical support experience in a pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing environment
• For Ph.D. degree: minimum 0 years of manufacturing or technical support experience in a pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing environment
Preferred Experience and Skills:
• Good interpersonal skills including flexibility and ability to work in a team environment. Demonstrated analytical abilities. Good written and verbal communication skills.
