At AstraZeneca, we're looking for an Oncology Corporate Affairs Senior Manager to join us in Gaithersburg and contribute to our vision of one day eliminating cancer as a cause of death.

Based in Gaithersburg (MD - USA), in this role, you will be part of the Global Oncology Corporate Affairs team, responsible for supporting the delivery of innovative global communications programs that tells a compelling story to bring to life the science-led pipeline and life changing medicines within Oncology in a way that resonates with a wide range of key audiences including employees, partners, medical community, academics and researchers, patients and the media

In addition, you will be supporting global communications programs that motivate and inspire a passionate, engaged community of employees, enabling them to reach their peak performance, with a reporting line to the Oncology Global Director of Internal Communications.

The role of the Global Oncology Corporate Affairs team - which includes internal and external communications, government affairs, and patient advocacy - is to deliver communication and advocacy that enhances and safeguards AstraZeneca's reputation in Oncology and shapes the environment to maximize our business success.


OBU leadership communications support

• Plays a key role supporting the development of comprehensive, integrated communication strategies to support the delivery of business priorities, with a primary focus on employee engagement
• Plays a key role in the development and delivery of programs to communicate the Oncology Strategy to all levels of the organization and ensure employees understand the key tenets of the strategy and how they support its delivery.
• Develop / deliver programs that help OBU leaders become effective communicators across all channels, proactively sharing information and progress related to key events/ issues/ activities
• Collaborate with other AZ Communication Leads to ensure integration and alignment with strategic direction, corporate narrative, and internal and external CA campaign and editorial planning processes

Employee engagement planning and coordination

•Drive and regularly evaluate programs and tactics to improve morale and establish the Oncology Business Unit as a best place to work. Support the delivery of the AZ Pulse survey remediation plan.
•Support and / or lead the communication planning, development and delivery for flagship events and programs such as global townhalls, major congress PreCon event and congress activity communications, and the OBU Awards program
•Leads and champions use of relevant communication channels -- such as Workplace, leadership e-mail, and Nucleus -- across the units; ensures adoption across organisation and implements measurement strategies to drive effectiveness and behaviour change
•Ensures communications are continuous, consistent and distributed through appropriate channels, working with Global Internal Comms and third-party agencies as required

Development and delivery of Oncology Corporate Affairs congress programs

•Support communications programs that leverage key data presentations and AZ presence with oncology community, thought leaders and media
•Drive communications programs that engage employees through PreCon events at major congresses (ASCO, ESMO) and reporting of congress activities via Workplace, Nucleus (intranet) and e-mail.
•Support planning and coordination of all Corporate Affairs cross-brand activities (media-training capabilities, video capabilities, etc)

Oncology reputation programs

•Support the development and delivery of signature programs/initiatives that contribute to enhancing AZ reputation in Oncology and differentiating from competition.
• Build collaborative relationships with regional and country communications teams to enable effective planning and implementation of programs at the global and local level. 

Management and oversight of content delivery

•Drafts leadership messages and critical business announcements as appropriate
•Management of content for OBU communications including intranet news (Nucleus), Town Halls, social collaboration tools (Workplace) and email
•Ensures all internal communication key messages reflect the company's business priorities, strategy and brand

Minimum Requirements - Education and Experience


•Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, marketing or related field
•5-7 years + communications experience
•Experience of working in large scale multi-national companies
•Experience of driving transformational change communications and working cross-functionally
•Advanced internal communications skills (including management of new digital/video tools and copywriting)
•Good understanding of all aspects of the pharmaceutical industry
•Communications agency management
•Ability to set and manage priorities, resources, goals, and project initiatives
•First-rate coordination, collaboration, organization and multi-tasking skills
•Project management skills


•Working knowledge of the role of marketing and medical affairs and their strategic importance on delivery business objectives
